The Destination: Kathmandu (Nepal)

For many, stepping off a plane into Kathmandu is a pupil-dilating experience, a riot of sights, sounds and smells that can quickly lead to sensory overload. Whether you’re barrelling through the traffic-jammed alleyways of the old town in a rickshaw, marvelling at the medieval temples or dodging trekking touts in the backpacker district of Thamel, Kathmandu can be an intoxicating, amazing and exhausting place.

Strolling through the backstreets and Kathmandu’s timeless cultural and artistic heritage still reveals hidden temples overflowing with marigolds, courtyards full of drying chillies and rice, and tiny hobbit-sized workshops. This endlessly fascinating city has enough sights to keep you busy for a week, but be sure to leave its backpacker comforts and explore the ‘real Nepal’ before your time runs out.

Macro Itinerary

Day 1: Sunday 29th March: Welcome to Kathmandu, a spicy masala of its mixed reputations. The gems of its heritage contrast with its manic traffic. Arriving at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, you’ll be met and received by a private transfer to whisk you away to the tourist hub of Thamel. Setlle-in at your hotel. Rest of the day at leisure. Overnight Kathmandu.

Day 2: Monday 30th March: After breakfast, drive towards Swayambhunath, a 5th century Buddhist stupa, perched high up on a hill. When the weather is clear, the views of the city and the greater Kathmandu Valley from Swayambhu are well worth the energy it takes to climb the 300 steep steps to get there. Next, we drive to Pashupatinath, Nepal’s holiest Hindu site dedicated to the God of Destruction – Lord Shiva. The site has held great significance since the 3rd century BC. Next, we visit Boudhanath Stupa. Dating from the 5th century, it’s one of the largest stupas in the world & is the most important Tibetan Buddhist site outside of Tibet. In the evening, explore via Rickshaw aka ‘street helicopters’, the colorful tourist hub of Thamel, then on to the bustling vegetable and spice markets of Asan – the oldest market square of Kathmandu. Continue to take the backstreets into the Kathmandu Durbar Square (also called Basantapur and Hanuman Dhoka).

Overnight Kathmandu.

Day 3: Tuesday 31st March.  Match Day. Enjoy our legendary GGArmy match day experience which includes a 2.5 hour pre-match event inclusive of food, alcohol & entertainment. Day 4: Wednesday 1st April: After breakfast we drive towards Patan Durbar Square area. You’ll be escorted by your guide to the medieval city of Patan – one of the 3 royal cities of Kathmandu. It is a destination for connoisseurs of fine arts, filled with the rich local traditions of wood and stone carvings, metal statues, ornate architecture, including dozens of Buddhist and Hindu temples, and over 1200 monuments. Next, our drive leads to the serene Himalayan hill station of Nagarkot – famous for its stunning sun-set views of the knife-edged Himalayan peaks – including distant Everest. Club Himalaya sits 7200 feet above sea level on Windy Hill with 360 unrestricted view of Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Sankhu, and the Himalayas. Later, drive to the oldest temple in Nepal and another of the world heritage sites – Changu Narayan, an insightful walk around the temple. Finally, Bhaktapur – with its old world charm, centuries old marvel of craftsmanship evident in temples and squares, and its people fiercely devotional to its ancestral ways of life and faith.
