Sam Kerr will head for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in goal scoring form after netting Chelsea’s opener in their 2-1 extra-time victory over Manchester United in the Women’s FA Cup on Sunday.
Kerr came off the bench to put the Blues ahead, marking her first goal in six games dating back to January 17.
The Matildas striker was a 72nd minute substitute for Alyssa Thompson with scores locked at 0-0.
Kerr broke the deadlock in the 78th minute, steering home Veerle Buurman’s knockdown with a left-foot strike after Ellie Carpenter’s drifted ball into the box.
But United equalizer three minutes later through Simi Awujo sending the game into extra-time, where Chelsea’s US international Naomi Girma netted the 99th minute winner.
Extra-time gave Kerr an additional 30 minutes of valuable game-time ahead of the Asian Cup, while Carpenter played the whole game.
Kerr has scored 10 goals in 23 appearances in all competitions this season, including two in the WSL, two in the League Cup, three in the Champions League and three in the FA Cup.
Mary Fowler gained valuable game-time, making her first start since April and playing 63 minutes in Manchester City’s comfortable 4-0 cup win over Sheffield United.
Fowler came close to marking her return with a goal, receiving Sam Coffey’s pass, advancing forward but putting her effort wide of the post.

Caitlin Foord put in a full shift and Steph Catley started and played 89 minutes as Arsenal eased past Bristol City 3-0.
Katrina Gorry was a 64th minute substitute for West Ham United while Charlize Rule put in a full shift for Brighton as they recorded a 2-1 win away to the Hammers.
Clare Wheeler played the full game for Everton as they were bundled out with a 2-1 loss to rivals Liverpool.
Teagan Micah was absent for Lyon’s 6-2 win at Marseille in France’s Premiere Ligue, having suffered a concussion at training a few weeks ago which has now ruled her out of the Asian Cup squad.
