Mary Fowler was forced out of Manchester City’s Women’s FA Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester United prematurely due to a knee injury that “doesn’t look great”.
Fowler bowed out of the game in the 25th minute after picking up the injury, with United going on to win 2-0 after two early goals.
After the game, City interim head coach Nick Cushing said Fowler would need further assessment, but clarified it wasn’t a long-term ACL.
Cushing said: “It doesn’t look great in the sense of adding her back into the training squad or to the injured squad imminently.
“We’ll have to wait, you don’t know about the turnaround quickly. To lose Mary in an important game at an early stage was really difficult. I think it is the knee, but I don’t want to speculate or confirm.
“We’re not fearing the worst here, but ultimately, if you come off with knee pain, to turn it around in seven days [is tough] but I don’t know, I’ll leave it with the medical team.”
United will play Sam Kerr’s Chelsea in the final after they got past Liverpool 2-1 in the other semi-final on Saturday. Teagan Micah was an unused substitute for the Reds.
On Kerr’s return from a long-term ACL injury, Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor said this week: “We’re still a few weeks away from Sam returning fully on the pitch, so it’s difficult to put a timeframe on it.”
In France’s Premiere Ligue, Ellie Carpenter put in a full shift in Lyon’s 2-2 draw with Paris FC, for whom Sarah Hunter was a 94th minute substitute.
