Sam Kerr marked his return from long-term injury with a goal as Chelsea got past Aston Villa 3-1 in the English Women’s Super League on Sunday.
Kerr hadn’t played since January last year due to an ACL injury, but returned off the bench for the Blues on Sunday, injected with 15 minutes to play.
The Matildas captain was busy in the lead-up to two Chelsea chances, before bundling home an opportunity of her own.
Kerr initially challenged for a header, before a goalmouth scramble where she lashed the ball home to usher celebrations with her and her teammates.
Ellie Carpenter played a full game for Chelsea in the win, playing a part in the opening goal after getting down the right flank and crossing inboard.
Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor said: “Personally, I’m really pleased. But I think she is also really pleased with that, and you know what Sam represents for Chelsea. For me, she’s an idol.
“We all know how tough it was for her, being away from the game and from the pitch for so long. She doesn’t like being in front of everyone and getting the limelight, but she really deserves it.
“I think she needs to enjoy it as well because she’s been through tough moments, so when you have positives, you need to celebrate them.”
“To score one hundred goals for Chelsea is something I’ll keep with me forever.” 💙
