Emily van Egmond scored as Birmingham City mounted a comeback only to draw 2-2 with London City Lionesses and miss out on promotion to the Women’s Super League on a dramatic final day in England’s second tier.
Second-placed Birmingham hosted leaders LCL, with the visitors knowing only a draw was needed to clinch top spot and promotion, while Brum needed all three points to leapfrog their opponents.
Van Egmond had a first-half effort cleared off the line, before the Lionesses pulled clear with two goals early in the second half.
Matildas midfielder van Egmond led the comeback with a headed goal from close range in the 63rd minute.
Brum got another with five minutes to go, ensuring a frantic finale but the Lionesses held on for promotion.
In the WSL on Sunday, Katrina Gorry was the standout Aussie performer with an assist for West Ham United in their 3-2 home loss to Aston Villa.
Gorry, who put in a full shift, provided the pass for Riko Ueki’s 34th minute goal which put the Hammers 2-1 up.
However Gorry had a bad moment when her misplaced back-pass was pounced on by Villa’s Rachel Daly who scored to level the game up.
