Martin Boyle netted his 12th league goal of the Scottish Premiership season to sit in the competition’s top five, helping Hibernian to a 3-1 win over Dundee United on Saturday.
The result boosts Hibs’ bid for qualification to the Europa League via third spot, with Boyle getting them off to the perfect start with a third-minute goal.
Boyle got lucky when Chris Cadden’s low cutback was partially cleared into the Australian, with the ball deflecting in off him.
Despite the touch of fortune, Boyle was excellent and earned a 7.5/10 rating from Edinburgh Evening News, who wrote: “His 17th goal of the season (in all competitions) for Hibs put the home side in control inside the opening three minutes.”
“Was still tracking back to cover opposition runs well into the second half, playing a captain’s role before being replaced by Gayle with seven minutes.”
Nectar Triantis put in a full shift and was rated 6.5/10: “Reads the game well and obviously has the range of passing needed to influence contests. Did a lot of hard work that goes unnoticed.”
The increasingly solid Jack Iredale put in a full shift and was rated 7/10: “Got his team out of jail more than once with his recovery pace. Stuck to his task of keeping the United front line quiet – and got forward on a couple of occasions.”
Lewis Miller was an 84th minute substitute for Hibs and “played his part”.
Johnny Koutroumbis was sent off with 10 minutes to go in Motherwell’s 2-1 win at Dundee.
Koutroumbis, who started at right-back, was given a straight red in the 80th minute for a lugne on Ziyad Larkeche, following VAR intervention.
On Sunday, Mat Ryan was strong in goal with four saves as Olympique Lyon dominated the chances, yet Ryan’s Lens triumphed 2-1.
The Socceroos shot-stopper did well early on to deny Ryan Cherki twice with low blocks.
After Lens took the lead, Ryan thwarted Cherki again in the 35th minute from an angled effort.
In the Dutch Eredivisie on Sunday, Max Balard played a full game in NAC Breda’s 3-1 home loss to PEC Zwolle.
NAC are seven points above the relegation playoff spot with three games to play.
Cameron Burgess put in a full shift and made a crucial stoppage-time interception to help Ipswich Town secure a come-from-behind 2-2 draw at Everton in England’s Premier League.
Burgess was rated 6/10 by East Anglian Daily Times, who wrote: “Technically claimed the assist for Enciso’s goal. Strong defensive display apart from the opener.”
Enciso’s goal was a spectacular long-range strike. Massimo Luongo was an unused substitute for Ipswich.
Raphael Borges Rodrigues was unused on the bench as Coventry City beat Tom Glover’s Middlesbrough 2-0 to secure their spot in the Championship promotion play-offs.
Coventry will play Sunderland across two legs starting Friday. Glover was the back-up goalkeeper for Boro and remained unused. Riley McGree was absent with injury.
Nestory Irankunda came close to scoring late in Grasshoppers’ 2-0 defeat to Winterthur in the Swiss Super League. Irankunda used his pace to cut through midfield, before fizzing a 20-metre shot just wide. He started and played 78 minutes.
Jackson Irvine (foot) and Connor Metcalfe (suspension) both missed St Pauli’s 1-0 home loss to VfB Stuttgart where they could’ve secured safety. St Pauli are 14th with two games to play, five points ahead Heidenheim in the relegation playoff spot.
Cameron Peupion was a 77th minute substitute for ADO Den Haag as they went down 4-3 to Cambuur in a crucial promotion clash in the Dutch Eerste Divisie. The result means ADO cannot earn automatic promotion but are likely destined for the playoffs.
