Riley McGree suffered heartbreak with Middlesbrough losing the English promotion playoff, worsened by a hamstring injury that has him racing the clock ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

McGree bowed out of Boro’s 1-0 loss to Hull City in the 76th minute after appearing to strain his left hamstring.

The score was 0-0 at the time, with Hull claiming the victory courtesy of an Oli McBurnie stoppage-time winner.

The post game was mainly focused on Boro’s defeat so there was no official update on McGree’s status from manager Kim Hellberg.

The Evening Gazette rated McGree 6/10 for his display and wrote: “Tried as best he could to make something happen for his side, but as much as he managed to get on the ball, there was little space for him to exploit.

“Off with what looked like a hamstring injury 15 minutes from time. Hopefully, with his World Cup in mind, that isn’t serious.”

Australia’s opening World Cup game is 21 days away, taking on Turkiye on June 14 in Vancouver.

Sammy Silvera was an unused substitute for Boro in the defeat.

Mat Ryan put in a full shift as relegation-battling Levante survived despite a 2-1 loss away to Real Betis in Spain’s La Liga.

Ryan had his moments, producing a reflex stop to tip Diego Llorente’s strike over the bar. Girona’s 1-1 draw with Elche meant they went down.

Marco Tilio got some rare game-time, coming on as a 71st minute substitute for Rapid Vienna in a 2-1 loss to Ried in the Austrian Bundesliga. It was Tilio’s first minutes since April 5.
