Sam Kerr provided an assist as Chelsea moved within a win of the English Women’s Super League title with a 2-0 home victory over Caitlin Foord and Steph Catley’s Arsenal on Sunday.
Kerr had a goal disallowed for offside in the 10th minute, while she had a 29th-minute shot saved at the near post, after Guro Reiten had put the Blues 1-0 up.
The Matildas skipper provided a cushioned header across goal in the 41st minute for Magdalena Eriksson to fire home after Reiten’s free-kick into the box.
Kerr dragged another shot wide prior to half-time and may have been made to pay for it, when Foord instinctively turned a deflected cross onto the crossbar in the 52nd minute, while Katie McCabe shot wide from a 60th-minute penalty.
Foord, in her third game from injury, was busy and dangerous for the Gunners down the left flank in attack. Catley came on at half-time for Arsenal too.
The result means Chelsea remain top by two points from Manchester United with one game to play.
Hayley Raso was a 76th minute substitute for Manchester City who coughed up a late goal to lose 2-1 to Manchester United, keeping the Red Devils within reach of Chelsea ahead of the final day.
Emily Gielnik was absent as Aston Villa drew 3-3 with Liverpool, while long-term absentee Kyah Simon‘s Tottenham won 4-1 over Reading.
Clare Wheeler put in a full shift as Everton beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 to move up to sixth. Lydia Williams was absent for Brighton who are safe from relegation despite the loss.
Courtney Nevin and Remy Siemsen‘s Leicester are not yet safe after a 2-1 home loss to Mackenzie Arnold’s West Ham. Nevin and Arnold played full games, while Siemsen started and was replaced on the hour.
Leicester are two points ahead of last-placed Reading with one game to play. On the final day, 11th-placed Leicester takes on 10th-placed Brighton, but Reading have a formidable assignment at home to Kerr’s Chelsea as they try to clinch the title.
United play seventh-placed Liverpool on the final day, while third-placed Arsenal host fifth-placed Aston Villa with any result enough to secure Champions League qualification ahead of fourth-placed City who entertain sixth-placed Everton.
Ellie Carpenter played a full game as Olympique Lyon beat Paris Saint-Germain to secure the French Feminine Division 1 title on Sunday.
The triumph comes after a week after Carpenter helped Lyon win the Coupe de France against the same opponent.
