Martin Boyle continued his remarkable resurgence with a double while Nectar Triantis added the other in Hibernian’s 3-1 win over Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday.
Socceroos winger Boyle had found himself out of favour at Hibs only six weeks ago, but has now scored five goals with two assists in his past six appearances.
Boyle opened the scoring in the 27th minute, instinctively ghosting in to tap home Jordan Obita’s low deflected left foot effort across goal.
He wasn’t the only Aussie impressing for Hibs, with Triantis converting brilliantly after swooping on an errant pass on the half hour. Triantis might’ve had a second after the ball fell to him unmarked at the back post but he fired off target.
Lewis Miller came on as a 62nd minute substitute and won the penalty for Boyle’s second goal after being pulled back from a free-kick. Jack Iredale, along with Boyle and Triantis played a full game.
Triantis continues to impress at Hibs, earning an 8/10 rating from Edinburgh Evening News who wrote: “Sunderland loanee scored a superb goal to make it 2-0, demonstrating improving game intelligence, running power and composure in a Man of the Match performance.”
Boyle was rated 6.5/10: “Calm finish for the opening goal. Ran channels all day – and his close control meant he had to be tightly marked. Super penalty.”
Cameron Burgess and Massimo Luongo both played full games as Ipswich Town progressed into the next round of the FA Cup with a 3-0 home victory over Bristol Rovers on Sunday.
Burgess and Luongo both earned 7/10 ratings from the East Anglian Daily Times.
On Burgess, they wrote: “Missed an early header. Largely untested defensively. An easy afternoon for him.”
On Luongo, they wrote: “Had a couple of shots blocked, with one winning a penalty for hand ball. Tried his best to contribute going forward, with little to do down the other end of the pitch.”
A fortnight after his Coventry City debut, Raphael Borges Rodrigues got more minutes, coming on in the 105th minute of their penalty shootout win over Sheffield Wednesday following a 1-1 draw.
The Coventry Telegraph rated the ex-Macarthur and Melbourne City man 5/10 and wrote: “Made his CBS Arena debut and showed some nice touches and got his foot in to help win back possession.”
Neither of Tom Glover and Riley McGree were overly impressive as Middlesbrough went down 1-0 to Blackburn at home in the FA Cup.
Glover almost gifted Rovers a goal with a wayward pass from defence, but Andreas Weimann couldn’t convert. But Weimann got the winner a few minutes later.
The Evening Gazette rated Glover, who put in a full shift, as 6/10 and wrote: “Largely untested throughout a game of little attacking quality and could do nothing with the goal.
“But he kick-started an error-ridden five minutes for Boro with his far from convincing ball out straight to Weimann that he just about got away with.”
McGree, who played 76 minutes from the start, was rated 5/10: “Struggling to find form right now. He just couldn’t really grasp any influence in the game from an attacking view point and there were a couple of slack passes that didn’t help.”
Olyroos midfielder Caleb Watts got an assist with a driving run out of midfield as Exeter City got past Oxford United 3-1. Watts started and played 67 minutes.
Joe Gauci was an unused sub for Aston Villa on Friday night as they won 2-1 over West Ham United.

Max Balard started and played 65 minutes in NAC Breda’s 4-2 home defeat to Heerenveen in the Dutch Eredivisie.
Craig Goodwin hit the scoresheet for Al Wehda in a 2-1 win over Al Fateh in Saudi Arabia’s Pro League on Thursday.
Goodwin opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a left-foot finish, marking his second goal in the past month, having previously not scored at club level since August.
