Caitlin Foord returned from the Women’s Super League winter break with a goal as Arsenal beat Everton 2-1 on Saturday, while Clare Hunt provided an assist in France.
Foord opened the scoring in the ninth minute for the Gunners, tapping home from close range with a simple finish from Victoria Pelova’s ball across goal.
In a game where Arsenal dominated the chances, Foord actually was relatively quiet in attack, fluffing a first-half volley and curling a 90th minute opportunity straight at the keeper.
Steph Catley started on the bench with Ireland captain Katie McCabe preferred at left-back, with the Matilda replacing her in the 83rd minute.
Kyra Cooney-Cross was an unused substitute while Clare Wheeler put in a full shift for the Toffees.
In the WSL on Sunday, Teagan Micah had a rough day at the office, committing a few errors and being lucky to stay on the pitch late after a crude challenge as Liverpool were hammered 5-1 by Mary Fowler’s Manchester City.
Micah, who put in a full shift for Liverpool in goals, did make good low saves in the 13th minute to deny Chloe Kelly, as well as in the 36th minute from Laura Coombs’ drilled effort. But Micah’s turnover when trying to play out from the back led to Khalifa Shaw’s goal for 2-1.
Down 4-1 in the 75th minute, Micah came off her line with Lauren Hemp through on goal and bundled over the City forward with a nasty tackle. City were awarded a penalty while Micah was fortunate to only receive a yellow card, when a red seemed likely.
Alanna Kennedy was absent for City while Fowler was a 60th minute substitute.
Mackenzie Arnold was back starting in the league for the first time since November but also endured a difficult night as struggling West Ham United went down 4-3 to Tottenham.
Katrina Gorry made her WSL debut in midfield for the Hammers after joining from Swedish club Vittsjo, playing a full game and firing a 37th minute long-range effort straight at the opposition goalkeeper.
Charlotte Grant, who also moved from Vittsjo to England in January, made her WSL debut for Spurs as a 91st minute substitute.
In the WSL on Friday night, Courtney Nevin started but was replaced in the 86th minute after a first-half yellow card as Leicester City lost 1-0 at home to Aston Villa. Remy Siemsen was unused.
On Sunday, Chelsea will take on Manchester United without Sam Kerr following her ACL injury, while Alanna Kennedy and Mary Fowler’s Man City face Teagan Micah’s Liverpool. Mackenzie Arnold’s struggling West Ham host Tottenham.
In France’s Feminine Division 1, Clare Hunt lofted a long ball forward to set up Tabita Chawinga’s goal as PSG routed Bordeaux 8-1.
Hunt was a half-time substitute, with her assist coming with the game dead and buried, as Chawinga netted their eighth goal in the 88th minute.
Ellie Carpenter’s league-leading Olympique Lyon go to Montpellier on Sunday.
In midweek, Hayley Raso was an 83rd minute substitute as Real Madrid were thrashed 4-0 by Barcelona in Spain’s SuperCopa Feminina semi-finals.
