Matildas superstar Mary Fowler scored a double including a stunning long-range strike as Manchester City won 4-0 away to Bristol City in the English Women’s Super League on Sunday.
City were frustrated for an hour despite dominating the chances before Fowler collected the ball in her attacking third, drove towards the edge of the box and thundered in a left-foot strike into the top corner.
Fowler’s 62nd minute goal broke the deadlock and she added another 13 minutes later, getting into the box and sweeping in Lauren Hemp’s cross from the right.
Fowler, playing in a more advanced role, put in a full shift while Alanna Kennedy started and played the first half.
The result means City are six points clear of second-placed Chelsea, who have two games in hand.
Arsenal are third, but are eight points back from City having played the same number of games, following a 1-1 draw at Clare Wheeler’s Everton.
Steph Catley (full game), Caitlin Foord (started and played 64 minutes) and Kyra Cooney-Cross (74th minute substitute) were all involved for Arsenal. Wheeler put in a full shift for Everton.
Mackenzie Arnold played a full game in goal as West Ham United scored late for a 1-1 draw at Aston Villa.
Charlotte Grant started and played 76 minutes in Tottenham’s 1-1 home draw with Brighton & Hove Albion.
Courtney Nevin and Remy Siemsen were unused subs in Leicester City’s 1-0 home loss to Manchester United.
In the Women’s UEFA Champions League semi-finals, Sam Kerr’s Chelsea were bundled out, losing 2-0 at home to Barcelona to go down 2-1 on aggregate.
Ellie Carpenter’s Olympique Lyon will face Barca in the final after overcoming Clare Hunt’s PSG 2-1 in the second leg for a 5-3 aggregate triumph. Carpenter put in a full shift while Hunt was absent.
