Mary Fowler scored a double to continue her bright form but it wasn’t enough for Manchester City who went down 4-3 to Arsenal in the Women’s Super League on Sunday.
Fowler’s brace means she has scored three goals and provided four assists from her past four games for City.
Arsenal, who started with both Steph Catley and Kyra Cooney-Cross while Caitlin Foord was out with a minor knock, went ahead 2-0 inside 10 minutes. Cooney-Cross’s pinpoint free-kick assisted Lotte Wubben-Moy’s header for 2-0.
In the 20th minute, Fowler arrived at the back post with power to nod home Aoba Fujino’s cross.
Early in the second half, Vivienne Miedema squared it up before Frida Maanum restored Arsenal’s lead.
But City found another equalizer from the penalty spot through Fowler in the 55th minute, with Catley wrongly adjudged to have brought down Fujino inside the box.
There was contact between the pair with Catley tugging at her arm, but that occurred just outside the box. Fowler stepped up and coolly slotted down the middle.
Arsenal, however, grabbed a 78th minute winner from Stina Blackstenius to rise above City into third spot.
Emily van Egmond made her debut for new club Birmingham City, coming on as a 67th minute substitute in their 1-0 victory away to Sunderland in England’s second tier Championship.
Van Egmond has joined Brum on a two-and-a-half-year deal, having recently parted ways with US club San Diego Wave. Birmingham City are currently top of the Championship and in contention for promotion.
“I’m happy to be here,” she told BluesTV. “I can’t wait to get started. When Birmingham came to me, I loved the ambition.
“They are top of the table right now, looking to get promoted, and I just thought what an opportunity to come to a great club and be part of something exciting.”
