Ellie Carpenter and Sam Kerr were both on the scoresheet for Chelsea as they got past London City Lionesses 2-0 in the English Women’s Super League.
Carpenter opened the scoring in the sixth minute, marking her first goal for the Blues since her off-season move from Olympique Lyon.
Matildas superstar Kerr replaced Carpenter in the 74th minute and added the second goal with a cool finish in stoppage time. The goal was Kerr’s second since returning from a long-term ACL injury.
Kerr struck with a well-weighted finish after goalkeeper Elena Lete half-cleared a hopeful ball, before Poppy Pattinson mis-controlled the header, allowing the Matilda to catch the keeper off her line.
Carpenter got the Blues off to a bright start, finding space at the back post to side-foot home a deflected low ball across goal.
“I think the main thing is for us to get three points, however that may come about,” Carpenter said. “If anyone scores or assists, it’s all for the team. I’m very proud to score my first Chelsea goal.”
