Socceroos defender Cameron Burgess provided an assist and had a goal chalked off in Ipswich Town’s 2-1 home loss to Bournemouth in the English Premier League on Sunday.
The Aussie was named as the East Anglian Daily Times’ Player of the Match and given an 8/10 rating for a busy display at both ends.
Burgess had put an early header over the bar from Omari Hutchinson’s right-wing cross, before he showed good composure to set up the opener.
The Socceroo found space inside the box, shaping up for a volley on goal, but instead cut the ball back deftly for Conor Chaplin to convert for 1-0 in the 21st minute.
Burgess had the ball in the back of the net from a 26th-minute corner as he climbed over Lewis Cook, but it was adjudged that was a foul elsewhere for a Liam Delap shove.
Town boss Kieran McKenna disputed that decision when he said: “I’ve seen it across all of the first 14 weeks of the season. I don’t see it being given against other teams.
“Like the game against Leicester it was a huge moment in the game to get the two-goal advantage.”
Burgess almost prevented Bournemouth’s late equaliser after goalkeeper Arijanet Muric raced off his line needlessly, with Enes Unal poking past the Aussie, before Dango Ouattara fired in the 95th minute winner.
Socceroos midfielder Jackson Irvine was beaten to a header for Bayer Leverkusen’s second goal as the German Bundesliga champions beat St Pauli 2-1 on Saturday.
Irvine put in a full shift at BayArena but St Pauli went 2-0 down inside 21 minutes, with Florian Wirtz scoring the opener in the sixth minute.
In the 21st minute, Irvine lost Jonathan Tah for a moment from a corner and the Leverkusen defender swooped to head home for 2-0.
St Pauli would pull a goal back late but it was another loss, leaving the newly-promoted side in 15th, just above the drop zone.
Connor Metcalfe remains sidelined due to injury.
Nestory Irankunda started and played 99 minutes for Bayern II in their 3-1 win over Augsburg II in Germany’s Regionalliga Bayern.
Denis Genreau was an unused sub in France’s Ligue 1 as Toulouse lost 2-0 at Monaco.
Mat Ryan also sat on the bench in Italy’s Serie A for AS Roma’s 4-1 home win over Lecce.
Ajdin Hrustic started and played 63 minutes in Serie B for Salernitana in a 1-1 draw at Modena.
Max Balard put in a full shift for NAC Breda in a 2-0 victory at Sparta Rotterdam in the Dutch Eredivisie.
Aiden O’Neill played a full game in Standard Liege’s 1-1 draw with Leuven in Belgium’s Pro League, where they conceded in the 94th minute.
Kye Rowles and Cam Devlin both impressed for Hearts in a 2-0 win over Dundee in the Scottish Premiership.
Rowles played a full game in defence and earned a 7/10 rating from Edinburgh Evening News, who wrote: “Worked in tandem with Halkett. Steady throughout without being put under too much pressure.”
Devlin put in a full shift in midfield and received an 8/10. Edinburgh Evening News wrote: “Always available to take the ball and didn’t waste a pass. His best performance of the season so far.”
Josh Nisbet came up against Rangers on Sunday, putting in a full shift as Ross County went down 3-0 to the Scottish giants.
Mitch Duke was a 74th minute substitute for Machida Zelvia who’s Japanese J1 League title push fell short on the final day, going down 3-1 to Kashima Antlers on Sunday. Machida finished third.
Kusini Yengi missed Portsmouth’s 3-0 win over Bristol City, following confirmation he’ll miss 9-10 weeks with his posterior cruciate injury. Sam Silvera was an unused sub for Pompey.
On Yengi, Portsmouth boss John Mousinho said during the week: “It’s not good news. He’d just started three games on the spin for us, went away with Australia, started against Bahrain and scored two goals.
“It felt, to us, like he was hitting a bit of form and coming back in to things nicely. There was going to be really good competition between all the centre-forwards we have in the building.”
