Joe Gauci has made a successful return from a hip injury after missing two months, playing the past two games for Barnsley in England’s League One.

Gauci returned after rehabbing the hip injury at parent club Aston Villa, having sustained the issue in February playing for the Tykes.

He returned last Monday in a 1-1 draw with Peterborough, backing that up with three saves on Saturday in Barnsley’s 2-1 home loss to lowly Shrewsbury.

Barnsley boss Conor Hourihane had indicated incumbent keeper Kieren Flavell would be preferred when Gauci returned to fitness, but the Ausie has slotted straight back in.

In France’s Ligue 1 on Sunday, Gauci’s Socceroos rival Mat Ryan was in goal as Lens were hammered 4-0 at home by Auxerre.

In Germany’s Bundesliga on Sunday, Connor Metcalfe was sent off for relegation-battling St Pauli in their 0-0 draw at Werder Bremen.

Metcalfe had come on in the 75th minute, picking up an 89th minute yellow card before another booking in the 92nd minute for kicking away the ball after a foul, leading to his marching orders.

Jackson Irvine was absent due to a foot injury. The draw moves 14th-placed St Pauli a step closer to securing their survival.

In Spain’s Segunda Division on Sunday, Denis Genreau scored for Deportivo La Coruna before being sent off late in a 2-1 loss to Racing Santander.

Genreau netted in the 86th minute, three minutes after coming on as a sub, running on to a well-weighed pass inside the box and rifling in at the near post.

But the Aussie was dismissed with a straight red in the 95th minute for a last-man foul after a teammate’s pass to him was slightly over-hit.

Elsewhere in England, Cameron Burgess put in a full shift while Massimo Luongo was an 86th minute substitute as Ipswich Town were officially relegated from the Premier League after a 3-0 loss at Newcastle.

Burgess was rated 5/10 by East Anglian Daily Times who wrote: “A few times he was beaten too easily, but important to remember the circumstances.”

In England’s Championship, Alex Robertson’s Cardiff City were also relegated after a 0-0 home draw with West Brom. Robertson started and played 78 minutes for the Bluebirds.

Raphael Borges Rodrigues’s Coventry City lost 1-0 at Luton Town, meaning their bid for a promotion playoff spot will come down to the final day. Coventry start the final day in sixth, hosting Middlesbrough.

Tom Glover was an unused sub as Middlesbrough drew 0-0 with Norwich City, leaving them also in contention for the playoffs, but needing a lot to go right.

In Denmark’s Superliga on Friday, Paul Izzo kept a clean sheet in Randers’ 0-0 home draw with Brondby. Mohamed Toure started and played 63 minutes, while Oliver Jones was an unused sub.

In Italy’s Serie B on Friday, Ajdin Hrustic came on at half-time and helped Salernitana to a 3-1 win over Cosenza, with the side scoring three second-half goals. Salernitana are battling relegation.

Cristian Volpato was an unused sub in promoted Sassuolo’s 2-0 win at Cesena.

In Scotland’s Premiership, Ryan Strain scored an own goal to open the scoring for Celtic who ran away 5-0 winners at Dundee United. Strain put in a full shift for United.

In the Dutch Eredivisie on Thursday, Max Balard put in a full shift in NAC Breda’s 1-1 draw at AZ.

In Korea’s K League 2, John Iredale continued his fine scoring form with a brace for Seoul E-Land in a 2-1 win over Gyeongnam.

Iredale, who netted a 93rd minute winner, has scored five goals in nine games since moving from Denmark to Korea.
