Jackson Irvine scored a late consolation goal and Connor Metcalfe got an assist but St Pauli’s promotion hopes suffered a blow with a 4-3 home loss to midtable Elversberg.
The result means St Pauli drop into second spot on the German 2.Bundesliga table with five games to play. Holstein Kiel are top on 58 points, with St Pauli second on 57, followed by Fortuna Dusseldorf on 52.
Metcalfe, who started and played 72 minutes, did well to keep the ball alive before cutting back for Marcel Hartel to put St Pauli 2-1 up in the 69th minute.
But the next 15 minutes saw Elversberg sensationally net three goals. Trailing 4-2, Irvine rifled home a low left-foot strike to put the margin but it was too little, too late.
Cameron Devlin scored a clever near-post goal to put Hearts up in their 4-2 victory over Livingston in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday.
Hearts went 2-0 down early, with Aussie forward Tete Yengi applying pressure leading to his side’s second goal where he earned the assist.
But Hearts rallied, with Devlin netting their third goal from Alex Cochrane’s left-flank ball which he slid home low through the keeper’s legs.
Yengi was sent off in the 58th minute after being replaced, having kicked a bottle on his way off and entered into a heated verbal exchange with his manager.
Devlin started and played 66 minutes, earning a 6/10 rating from Edinburgh Evening News, who wrote: “Got dragged into a midfield battle that suited Livingston before breaking forward and netting, and that was the platform for the rest of his performance. Should have had a second.”
Nathaniel Atkinson put in a full shift and earned a 6/10 rating: “Came in for Lembikisa and Dan McKay gave him plenty to think about early doors. Steadied once the team settled into proceedings and a good challenge to deny Yengi a chance.”
Kye Rowles played a full game and was rated 6/10: “Yengi’s physicality a challenging task but eventually got to grips with it. Comfortable in possession.”
Massimo Luongo got on the scoresheet as Ipswich Town missed a big opportunity to boost their promotion hopes with a 1-1 home draw against Middlesbrough in the English Championship.
The retired Socceroo netted with a perfectly-timed run into the box to volley home from a corner at the back post on the half hour.
Luongo started and played 77 minutes, while Cam Burgess put in a full shift as the Tractor Boys moved a point clear at the top, ahead of Leicester City and Leeds United in the race for automatic promotion.
Sam Silvera started and played 69 minutes for Boro, who were without Tom Glover and Riley McGree (injury).
Cristian Volpato started and played the first half as Sassuolo drew 3-3 with AC Milan in the Italian Serie A. Sassuolo led 2-1 at half-time.
Alessandro Circati played a full game as leaders Parma moved a step closer to promotion with a 2-0 home victory over Spezia in the Italian Serie B.
Mat Ryan was caught off his line from David Min’s near-halfway shot before AZ Alkmaar rallied from two goals down to win 3-2 over RKC Waalwijk in the Dutch Eredivisie.
Ajdin Hrustic put in a full shift as Heracles lost 2-0 at home to Heerenveen in the Eredivisie on Sunday.
