Mary Fowler opened the scoring after working a neat one-two as Manchester City were bundled out of the Women’s English FA Cup quarter-finals on penalties by Tottenham on Sunday.
Fowler started for the first time since November and made the early impact when drove forward, combined with Khalifa Shaw and saw a deflected strike find its way into the back of the net.
The Matildas forward had played City’s past 11 games off the bench, while across the season she had started nine times in all competitions, with 14 substitute appearances.
The game, however, went to extra-time after a calamitous error allowed Beth England to equalize in the 96th minute.
In the shootout, City missed their first two spotkicks. Fowler stepped up to convert the fifth, firing low to the goalkeeper’s right, but Amy James-Turner scored for Spurs who triumphed 4-3.
Charlotte Grant and Alanna Kennedy were both unused subs for their sides.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Clare Wheeler put in a full shift as Everton went down 1-0 to Chelsea.
Courtney Nevin played the first 45 minutes as Leicester City knocked Teagan Micah’s Liverpool out of the cup 2-0 on Saturday.
Micah and Remy Siemsen were both unused subs.
In Sweden’s Svenska Cupen Women, Amy Sayer scored as Kristianstads eased past Lidkoping 8-1. Sayer netted her side’s second goal in the eighth minute.

Ellie Carpenter’s Olympique Lyon suffered a shock Coupe de France semi-final exit on penalties to Fleury 91 on Saturday.
Carpenter put in a full shift as the game went scoreless for 120 minutes and on to penalties, with Fleury triumphing 5-4 on penalties.
The Matildas full-back didn’t take a spotkick, with seven Lyon players stepping up only for Delphine Cascarino to fail to convert the decisive penalty.
Lyon have dominated the French Feminine Division 1 this season, sitting seven points clear of second-placed PSG with a 15-1-0 record.

Clare Hunt was an unused sub as PSG clinched a spot in the final with a 4-3 penalties win over Paris FC after a 1-1 draw on Sunday.
In Spain’s Primera Division Femenina, Hayley Raso was a 62nd minute substitute in Real Madrid’s 1-0 win at Sevilla. Real are six points behind leaders Barcelona.
