Mary Fowler made it two goals in two games as she continues to impress in her new starting role for Manchester City, helping them to a 4-1 win at Brighton in the English Women’s Super League on Sunday.
Fowler played a part in the opener, calmly passing to Jessica Park in midfield after Yui Hasegawa’s intercept. Park released Lauren Hemp to squirm home.
The Matildas’ corner almost led to a second with Alex Greenwood’s header cleared off the line.
It was Fowler who made it 2-0 in the 40th minute, sliding home and volleying home Hemp’s inviting left-wing cross.
Fowler set up the fourth goal after some quick feet on the right flank before receiving the ball on the byline after a series of passes and cutting back expertly for Laura Coombs to fire home.
Fowler put in a full shift for the second time in a week, having not played a full 90 at club level since November prior to that.
Alanna Kennedy came off the bench as an 83rd minute substitute for City.
Mackenzie Arnold played a full game while Katrina Gorry started and got through 75 minutes in West Ham United’s 2-1 loss at Liverpool. Teagan Micah was unused for the Reds.
Courtney Nevin was an 85th minute sub while Charlotte Grant and Remy Siemsen went unused in Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Leicester City.
Caitlin Foord, Steph Catley and Kyra Cooney-Cross’ title hopes with Arsenal took a major blow after going down 3-1 to Chelsea on Friday.
Catley started but was replaced at half-time, while Foord started and played 57 minutes. Cooney-Cross came on in the 72nd minute.
But none of the trio made any major impact in the contest, where Sam Kerr’s Blues led 3-0 at half-time.
The result means Chelsea are top with 40 points from 16 games, with Arsenal in third on 34 points.
Clare Wheeler put in a full shift as Everton went down 2-1 to Aston Villa on Saturday.
In France’s Feminine Division 1 on Saturday, Clare Hunt was used as a substitute on the hour in PSG’s 5-0 win over St Etienne.
