Cameron Burgess and Kusini Yengi both scored goals to help their promotion hopeful clubs claim important wins, while Connor Metcalfe played a big part in St Pauli’s latest triumph to boost their promotion bid.
Socceroo Cameron Burgess was among the goals as Ipswich Town maintained their promotion charge with an emphatic 6-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday in the English Championship on Saturday.
Burgess poked in Ipswich’s second goal in the 37th minute from a corner after a teammate’s header had cannoned into the crossbar, leading to a goalmouth scramble.
The East Anglian Daily Times rated Burgess 8/10, while Massimo Luongo – who started and played 85 minutes – earned a 9/10 following a strong display.
Ipswich are now second in the Championship and one point behind leaders Leicester City who have a game in hand. Ipswich are on 81 points, with third-placed Leeds (who play on Sunday) on 79 and fourth-placed Southampton on 73.
Kusini Yengi came off the bench to net the winner for League One promotion hopefuls Portsmouth in a 1-0 triumph at Peterborough United on Saturday.
Yengi was introduced in the 32nd minute for the injured Christian Saydee and took his moment in the 77th minute when he was found on the left on a counter-attack.
The Socceroo controlled the ball, took a few touches before driving past a defender and rifling in a low left-foot shot under the goalkeeper.
Portsmouth are top of League One on 83 points from 39 games, ahead of Derby County on 78 and Bolton in third on 74, with seven games to play.
Jackson Irvine and Connor Metcalfe both played full games as St Pauli moved another step closer to promotion with a 2-0 victory away to FC Nurnberg in the German 2.Bundesliga.
Irvine was involved in the lead-up to the opening goal, spreading play right before Philipp Treu was nodded home by Johannes Eggestein.
Metcalfe almost provided the pass for the second after a neat one-two on the edge of the box in the 52nd minute, but Elias Saad shot wide.
However, it was Metcalfe who intercepted a pass in the 62nd minute and released Eggestein inside the box, before his cutback was fired home by Marcel Hartel.
Recalled Socceroos midfielder Ajdin Hrustic put in a full shift as Heracles won 2-0 over Go Ahead Eagles on Friday to move five points clear of the Dutch Eredivisie bottom three.
Mat Ryan kept a clean sheet in AZ Alkmaar’s comfortable 4-0 win away to Garang Kuol’s struggling FC Volendam on Sunday. Kuol was unused.
Harry Souttar was left out of Leicester City’s matchday squad altogether as they went down 4-2 to Chelsea in the English FA Cup quarter-finals on Sunday.
Cristian Volpato was a 72nd minute substitute for Sassuolo in a 1-0 defeat to his former club AS Roma in the Italian Serie A on Sunday.
